Places to See – MURALS at the Department of the Interior Building


I’m back to blogging and return with a new “Places to see” feature.  As always I focus on sights in DC that are not as well known or recognized.  Today I am talking about the Department of the Interior Building located on Eighteenth and C Streets NW.




Now some might ask why I would want to take a tour of what is essentially an office building.  While the building it self is quite impressive with its monumental exterior, wide corridors, and high ceilings, it just happens to be that the Department of the Interior has amassed an extensive collection of Art in its building since it opened in 1936.




The building now houses about fifty murals depicting moments in American history by artist such as Maynard Dixon, Allan Houser, Gifford Beal, and John Steuart Curry.  Also In the collection is a very impressive collection of large Ansel Adams photographs that were commissioned by the department of the Interior.
